About Interlingua

Interlingua is the International Language.

It was published in 1951, and is the result of extensive cooperation between dozens of linguists from Europe and the United States. Interlingua's vocabulary is derived from international words that are based on Latin and Greek. These words are common to Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and English, with German and Russian serving as secondary reference languages. The grammar of Interlingua is simple and easy, and the pronounciation is continental European.

Interlingua Is...

Practical. Interlingua is understood by millions "at first sight". Speakers of Romance languages understand Interlingua immediately and effortlessly.

Easy. The grammar of Interlingua is uniform and the pronunciation follows simple rules. With Interlingua, there are no endless lists of exceptions and irregularities.

Educational. Because of it's focus on the International Core Vocabulary (ICV), Interlingua forms an ideal base for the study of other languages.

Natural. Interlingua is free of artificial or invented features. Every characteristic is based on at least three languages of European origin.

Scientific. Interlingua is the result of a systematic process of extraction of the international vocabulary, from the major European languages.

"Modern Latin". Most international words are of Latin or Greek origin. In Interlingua, these international words take a standardized form. The result is a sort of "modern Latin" that is international, easy and practical.

Neutral. Interlingua is not the property of any single culture or nation, therefore no native speaker has an unfair advantage. Because of this, Interlingua puts an end to linguistic discrimination.
